Rob Brooks On ‘Artificial Intimacy’

The evolutionary biologist and pop-sci author Rob Brooks has been introducing the concept of ‘Artificial Intimacy’ while promoting the forthcoming publication of his new book by the same name (subtitled – ‘Virtual Friends, Digital Lovers, and Algorithmic Matchmakers’). The idea is that the digitalization of our sex and love lives, from sex robots and VR porn to algorithmic dating apps, are creating an ‘artificial intimacy’ that might not always be for the best.

This promises to be an interesting examination of the way technology is changing our sexual lives, in a hopefully objective and fair manner, grounded as it is in evolutionary science. According to a recent article for The Conversation, the author seems to have some sympathy for ‘incels’ who are arguably being left behind by such things as dating apps powered by increasingly sophisticated match making algorithms.

Last month I started writing an article that was to introduce the concept of the ‘Unhappy Valley’. The idea is that with realistic sex dolls, sex robots, and VR porn, we may be crossing the infamous ‘Uncanny Valley’ to be greeted by something less unnerving perhaps, but more emotionally painful. The Unofficial VR Porn Reddit ‘OculusNSFW’ Reaches 100K Members

In another sign of the impact the release of the Oculus Quest 2 is having on the size of the VR porn market, the most popular VR porn subreddit has reached the milestone of 100K. Only two months ago and r/oculusnsfw was still on 93K, and it was actually launched all the way back in 2013, well before the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift had been released.

Although, as you might expect, the majority of the posts are from the various pay sites announcing their latest movie, as well as some affiliate spam, there are still regular enough informative threads to make it a must join subreddit for sex tech fans. We’re a long way from 100K members, but hopefully things will slowly start to snowball.

Steam rejects VR sex experience Holodexxx

One thing holding back the growth of adult metaverses in VR is the reluctance of platforms to allow anything they consider porn. And last week Holodexxx were refused permission to offer their VR sex experience on the Steam games platform.

“The future of adult entertainment is photo-realistic adult stars in virtual reality” according to the developer of Holodexxx, which takes scanned 3D models based on adult film stars “and brings them to life using the latest in chatbot technology.” As Holodexxx’s developer explained in a recent blog post, after being rejected three times over the last year they have given up on trying to sell their vision of the “future of adult entertainment” on Steam.

First, Holodexxx submitted a nudity-free “PG-13 experience” in which a virtual model of actor Riley Reid “performs a sensual dance” while a video of other scanned models dancing played in the background. It was rejected with “a boiler-plate explanation that video pornography was not allowed on Steam”. Next, Holodexxx submitted Meet Marley, which gave users the opportunity to inspect a naked 3D model based on adult performer Marley Brinx. After that was rejected, they asked Valve’s submissions team for further explanation, requesting “a brief outline of what would be allowed on Steam, considering our content”. They did not receive one, instead being told that Valve “will judge our next app when they receive it.”
