US Government Obtains Pledge From Big Tech To Remove Nudity From AI Data Sets
In the midst of the world-wide hysteria over deep fake porn, as well as concerns over the spread of abusive AI-generated imagery, the US government has successfully sought voluntary commitments from a number of leading big tech firms in the field of AI to implement relevant safeguards.
In particular, it seems that the companies, which include OpenAI, have pledged to do two things. The first of them involves “incorporating feedback loops and iterative stress-testing strategies in their development processes, to guard against AI models outputting image-based sexual abuse”. This sounds uncontroversial, at least if ‘image-based sexual abuse’ relates to images that are already illegal, such as child abuse material.
However, the second ‘pledge’ would suggest that the US is trying to force big tech to ensure that their tools cannot be used to create deepfake porn. And they appear to be taking a sledgehammer approach, by even requesting that the companies remove nude images from the data sets used to train the AI systems.
And “removing nude images from AI training datasets” when appropriate.
An AI that has not seen nudity, cannot be considered remotely human, no matter how intelligent it becomes. That a super AI may emerge, in which the idea that nudity is taboo has been baked into it, is a chilling prospect. And on a more mundane level, it is obviously going to impact the development of NSFW AI image generators.
However, notable absentees from the pledge were Google, Apple, Meta, and Amazon. And one AI company that was represented at the meeting, and which did not sign up to the second pledge, was ‘Common Crawl’. This is a non-profit organization that crawls the Internet to provide AI training data sets for the public.
16 Year Old South Korean Boy Attempts Suicide After Watching And Sharing Deepfake Porn
South Korea is currently in the grip of a massive moral panic over deepfake porn, with politicians promising to introduce harsh new laws. A 16 year old boy has attempted to commit suicide after being questioned over watching and sharing (not producing) deepfake porn images.
On the morning of September 6, authorities received an emergency call from a concerned citizen reporting that A was preparing to jump from the roof of a high-rise building in Andong City. When police and firefighters arrived at the scene, A was standing on top of a water tank on the roof, repeatedly expressing his deep guilt and hopelessness, saying, “I’ve committed a grave sin against society. I don’t want to live anymore.”
Thankfully, the teen was eventually coaxed down. According to one statistic this week, 93% of deepfake porn suspects are teenage boys. South Korea has the world’s fourth highest suicide rate, with over twice as many males as females ending their lives. There is of course no moral panic over this.

ChatGPT Store Offers AI Porn Generator To Satisfy ‘Dark Cravings’
A Gizmodo ‘investigation’ has revealed that OpenAI’s official ChatGPT store is offering prohibited NSFW image generators. One such tool contravening the company/store policies openly boasts that it can satisfy your ‘dark cravings’.
Searching the store for “NSFW” returned results like NSFW AI Art Generator, a GPT customized by Offrobe AI that’s been used more than 10,000 times, according to store data. The chat interface for the GPT links to Offrobe AI’s website, which prominently states its purpose: “Generate AI porn to satisfy your dark cravings.”
Needless to say, in the light of widely held scepticism of OpenAI’s committment to ensuring safety in its AI business, being unable to keep porn generators off of the official ChatGPT store wont do much to allay those fears. I’d still rather the media focused on the threat of a rogue super AGAI ending humanity in the next decade, rather than hysteria over naughty Taylor Swift deepfakes and the like.
